Naturally caffeine-free. Rooibos is a direct translation from Afrikaan meaning “red bush” and is a natural herb which grows around 1500 to 2000 feet above sea level in the Cedarberg Mountains of the Western Cape of South Africa.

Rooibos seeds are planted during February and March then tended for 18 months. The entire bush is harvested, cut and milled to a uniform length before bruising between rollers which triggers the oxidation process. This turns the tea from green to its characteristic reddish brown color and develops a natural sweet aroma.

Our Rooibos has a soothing effect on headaches, disturbed sleeping patterns and digestive or colic problems. Many of our daily recommended nutrients can be derived from hot or iced cups of Rooibos, such as Iron, Copper, Zinc, Magnesium, Fluoride, Manganese and Sodium which means healthy skin, teeth, bones, blood and metabolic functions.

Does this all sound too good to be true? We don’t think so, and we drink a ton of Rooibos at Local Coffee + Tea, and we are all very healthy specimens! 20 to 25 cups of tea can be made from 2 oz of loose leaf rooibos. We also suggest steeping our Rooibos multiple times for even more cups of great tea.

BREWING INSTRUCTIONS

Selby Select and Mote Beach are my two favorite Local teas; I often bounce between them depending on my mood, and they are the two flavors I always serve to guests. Guests ALWAYS want to know where I got these teas because they are so delicious and unique. Selby Select smells like an Orange Dreamsicle, and with a touch of sweet yogurt flavor, tastes a bit like one too. I find plain liquid Stevia sweetens this tea better than honey or maple syrup since it allows the tea’s flavors to come through better. Being caffeine free, I can have it in the evening and not worry about it affecting my sleep, and rooibos is good for digestion and health as well.

Selby Select was the first Local Tea Company tea I had at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, FL in 2005. It wowed my taste buds so much I bought it and several other Local Teas and I have been buying them online ever since.

Whomever is crafting these flavors is a master at flavor combining. I have found one other company that had ONE tea of their many blends comparable in flavor to these teas. Local Tea has a fantastic and varied line of teas. I’m not a coffee drinker so I can’t comment on their coffees, but I suspect they are superb as well.
