Rooibos Tea Details

RooibosTea is the most popular tea we sell at Local Tea Company.  As I rebuild our Sip Locally Tea Journey blog, Rooibos Tea Details is the first topic I want to share with you.

Long ago, I reached the stage where my love of Rooibos Tea is such that it would be hard to imagine life without Rooibos Tea, so lemme share some Rooibos Tea Details with you.

All About Rooibos Tea

I am a black tea drinker, specifically Lapsang Souchong.  You may know this from the video I made about making the ‘Perfect Cuppa Lapsang Souchong.”  I love the taste of tea, the aroma of lapsang in a warming teapot, and the creamy combination of my own honey and frothed Oat Milk.  I start my day with a cuppa Lapsang Souchong.

However, I have reached an age where too much caffeine is disruptive to my body and affects my sleep.

Enter Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), a broom-like shrub and member of the legume family found in a small area of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

The word Rooibos, pronounced Roy-boss, is Afrikaans for ‘Red Bush’ and has been popular in South Africa for generations. Rooibos has a substantial following worldwide due to the many health benefits AND Mma Ramotswe, a certain lady detective.

In case you are one of the few people who have yet to see or read the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith, please put the book on your reading list.  Like the tea, these books are compelling, relaxing, and worthy of your time.

So, what Rooibos Tea Details should you know?

Rooibos has very high antioxidant levels (aspalathin). In fact, some claim that Rooibos Tea has more antioxidants than Green Tea. If you are not keen on drinking Green Tea, you should try Rooibos Tea.

The tannin levels are low, tannin causes astringency, the bitterness in true tea, and there is no oxalic acid in Rooibos Tea, which is a benefit for anyone suffering from kidney stones.

Relaxing and restful, Rooibos Tea can assist with nervous tension, allergies, dermatological issues, and anti-spasmodic properties.  Drinking Rooibos Tea can help with your digestive problems.

In South Africa, Rooibos Tea is used to aid infants suffering from colic and is added to their bathwater to soften their skin.

Research continues on possible anti-cancer properties, and I think we will hear more about the benefits of drinking Rooibos Tea for some time.

Perhaps most important, you will find NOTHING about Rooibos Tea's adverse effects; at least we could not come up with any, which is quite amazing!

Caffeine-Free

Rooibos is a NATURALLY caffeine-free herb, making it the perfect tea for my sleeping predicament. This tea tastes and feels good, and Rooibos Tea is a regular after-dinner beverage in our house.

At Local Tea Company, we have a wonderful collection of Rooibos Teas.

Our best seller is Selby Select, an orange peel and vanilla blend we custom created for Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and was the first of our Celebrating Sarasota Collection of Teas.

Vanilla is the only edible portion of an orchid, and Selby is the world’s home of Orchid research.  You can expect a post very soon about our Selby Select Rooibos and some of the other teas we created to celebrate this botanical oasis in the heart of downtown Sarasota.

Before I tell you about the other Rooibos Teas available at Local Tea Company, I want to go a bit deeper and share a few more health benefits of Rooibos Tea with you.

Health Benefits of Rooibos Tea

One of the main benefits of Rooibos Tea is its high antioxidant content. Antioxidants are important for maintaining good health, as they help to protect the body against damage from free radicals.

Rooibos Tea is particularly high in the antioxidant aspalathin, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Rooibos Tea is also a great source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These minerals are important for maintaining strong bones and muscles, as well as for regulating blood pressure and heart function.

In addition to its health benefits, Rooibos Tea is a great alternative to traditional tea and coffee. Because it is caffeine-free, Rooibos Tea is a great option for those who, like me, are sensitive to caffeine or who want to reduce their caffeine intake.

Rooibos Tea is naturally sweet, so it can be enjoyed without the need for added sugar or sweeteners.

Rooibos Tea from Local Tea Company

Another of our Local Treasures here in Sarasota is The Ringling Museum.  And the first tea we created to celebrate John Ringling, the Circus magnate, is Mable’s Rose Rooibos Tea.

The tea celebrates the spectacular rose garden that his wife, Mable Ringling, created on the grounds of what was Ca d’Zan - John’s House.  This gem of a tea deserves its own blog post, especially as how important Ringling has been to Sarasota.

Rooibos with rose petals and cherry blossoms.  The blend is mildly floral with a balance of sweetness.  As we like to say, if you like John’s house, you will love Mable’s tea.

Bertha Palmer is another incredible Sarasotan that left Sarasota far better than she found it in 1910.  We created a tea for her to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her arrival in Sarasota in 2010, and Bertha Palmer Rooibos Tea has been popular ever since.

You can expect a blog post about this incredible lady as well.  She is credited with inventing the brownie.  Her tea is an exquisite blend of licorice, peppermint, verbena, and fennel.

Strawberry Rooibos is our newest Rooibos Tea, and we have a blog post about this lovely addition to our Tea Menu, Strawberry Meets Rooibos.

The list of Rooibos Teas continues with Van Wezel Rooibos Tea.  We created this blend to celebrate The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Sarasota Bay is the world's only purple seashell-shaped theater.  We combined red and black currants with rooibos to go for an eclectic purple blend.

Two other blends I want to mention are our Lemon Sunset Rooibos Tea with lemongrass and lemon peel and our Sweet Sin Rooibos Tea with raspberry and vanilla, which is especially popular around Valentine's Day.

Thart is a short list of our Rooibos Teas, we have others for you to discover.  We are all about Rooibos Tea Details here at Local Tea Company. I hope you agree, we have quite a line-up, and if you are an iced tea drinker, you will appreciate that all of the Rooibos Teas are beautifully iced!

Overall, Rooibos Tea is a delicious and healthy beverage that is worth adding to your daily routine. Whether you enjoy it hot or cold, this tea is sure to become a staple in your diet.

Why not give it a try today and experience all the benefits that rooibos tea has to offer?  An option for you is our Rooibos Tea Sampler with four different Rooibos teas for you to try; Selby Select, Mable Rose, Organic Lavender, and Lemon Sunset.

Finally, I mentioned Mama Ramotswe earlier, the protagonist in the Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency books.  She drinks Rooibos throughout her day and calls it ‘Bush Tea.’  If a child falls and skins a knee or a dead body turns up, Mama Ramotswe starts with a cuppa Bush Tea.

A true inspiration for us Rooibos Tea drinkers.

Cheers,

md
